Archaeobiology & Geoarchaeology/Micromorphology
Team 3 at the Integrative Prähistorische und Naturwissenschaftliche Archäologie (IPNA, University of Basel) is investigating various Proto-Roman sites in Germany and Austria using geoarchaeological and archaeozoological methods (Figure 1). A special feature is the close integration of micromorphological and archaeobiological analyses of sediment samples (Figure 2). Among other things, Team 3 is researching the following aspects of the site:
- Waste behavior and waste management
- Importance of taphonomic processes
- Construction and maintenance of the sites
- Social practices (e.g. ritual acts)
- Eating and drinking on the squares
- Craft activities on the squares
- Role of animals and animal products
In addition to the investigation of archaeological key sites, Team 3, together with Moroccan partners and with financial support from the Swiss-Liechtenstein Foundation for Archaeological Research Abroad (SLSA), carried out an ethnoarchaeological project on traditional marketplaces in the Atlas Mountains (Morocco) in August 2023. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the processes and organizational procedures in traditional (market) places (Figures 3 and 4).
